Calving Time - grafting a calf onto a new mom

If there is a cow who has lost her calf, Farmer Bob grafts a twin or orphaned calf onto this cow. Such was the case for this little twin. His mother had enough milk for her two little bull calves now, but as they grow there may have been a shortage of milk.
For the first feeding, we put the cow into a head-gate and make sure the calf is able to find the udder and get a drink from his new mother. At times the cow can be unhappy about this, because she knows this is not her calf, and without the restraint, she may not allow the calf to drink.
This union was a happy one and after one feeding the cow gently talked to the calf and became very protective. As we say she "mothered up" and the little calf will have a very healthy life with his new mother. (photo - Black Angus cow and adopted bull calf)

what a beautiful little calf, so glad you had success in the mothering up, my sister just had a cow that lost a calf and they got her to take another calf successfully,so it was a great day all around. Last year I got a dairy goat to take two of the quad kids we had on the bottle when she lost her kid, I took some vanilla that my daughter brought back from Mexico for me, and I put some in my hand and mother goat loved it so covered the kids with it and by the time she cleaned it off the kids she decided they were hers.
